Jordan Sushi on the North Shore

I've been to Jordan Sushi once or twice since it opened up on Lonsdale just around the corner from where I live, and it was a good experience with great food and attentive service.
Tonight, however, we tried to get into Hachi Hana - my old standby (and favourite) - but it was packed at 8pm and we didn't want to wait so we headed up to Jordan.
There was plenty of seating available so we got a nice table which is a change from Hachi Hana where you are often packed in like sardines, constantly half listening to the conversation happening at the next table.
Our waitress was very friendly and attentive.  We were slightly puzzled by the dinner combinations since they seemed high at either $40 or $70 a person, but our waitress informed us that there was a combination for $40 for two (though the menu said it was only available Monday through Thursday), but that the amount of food would be less.  We said we would try it, thinking that if we were still full we could supplement our meal with another roll or appetizer.
First out came the miso soup which was on par with any other Japanese restaurant we go to.  This was followed with a seafood salad which was totally amazing: fresh, light and flavourful with a delightful, tasty, light miso-sesame (?) dressing.
Following this, we were brought "Ebiyonaisse", which sounded somewhat odd, but what proved to a very light and delicate prawn tempura with their house mayo.  It wasn't overly greasy, and we still were able to get the flavour of the prawns through the tempura.  The drizzled house mayo was a nice touch.
Next we were brought the Jordan roll, which is "prawn tempura, crab and spicy braised tuna on top".  A bit more decadent than what we would normally get when it comes to a roll, but it was amazing good.  Spicy, tasty, even a bit creamy - and then with a bit of crunchy onion flakes on top?  It was decadent, but it was worth it.  Along with this came some salmon and tuna sushi and sashimi.  The tuna was melt in your mouth delectable.  The salmon, unfortunately, was Atlantic salmon and wasn't at all on par with the tuna, but they do serve sockeye salmon sashimi for a slight price increase, which I will absolutely get next time.
At this point we were both starting to feel a little full, and then we were brought out the beef teriyaki.  I'm not normally a big read meat eater, but I tend to order beef teriyaki over chicken when I'm out because it is less greasy as the chicken tends to come with the skin on and be more grisly.  The beef teriyaki was from a nice cut of meat and there was no gristle or marbling in it.  It was perfectly cut and not doused in sauce.  It came with some grilled vegetables (peppers, broccoli and a mushroom) which were sauteed to perfection: crisp and fresh.
Lastly, the ambiance of Jordan Sushi is very nice: they play jazz; they have nice, comfy, high backed chairs.  The decor is nice, maybe a little minimalist and perhaps dimming the lights might make for a more relaxed ambiance, but we're really splitting hairs here.
Anyways, the takeaway is that I'm glad Hachi Hana was full tonight.  I will re-directing my attention to Jordan Sushi in the days to come.  The food is flawless, the service attentive, and the dining experience much more relaxed.

  1. Sounds remarkably like our most recent sushi experience when we tried out a new-for-us place in The Beaches called Yumei Sushi. Unpretentious, but remarkably good food. It is now our go-to place for Japanese food.

    1. I hope they both make it. I'm sure Toronto, like here, is teeming with sushi joints.
