So the Mona Lisa... what are your thoughts?

Got into the Louvre pretty quickly today.  Tried to follow the Rick Steves' guide and hit the main bits without losing our minds.
Venus de Milo was very beautiful.  I enjoyed that sculpture from many different angles and it was very serene and yet had a very solid presence, given that her arms are sadly missing.
View, obviously, so many incredible sculptures, paintings and basically whatever else the French plundered from other countries as we could possibly absorb.
Got totally turned around, tempers flared a little bit, and I can understand how one can go from placing a lock on the Pont des Arts to abandoning one's partner in the underground portion of the Louvre.
We persevered!
I did make it to the very front of the line at the Mona Lisa whilst being jostled and shoved rather horrifically.
It was really a sad state of affairs, actually.  Some young "gentlemen" had made it to the front and were quite determined to get selfies of themselves in front of Leonardo's painting to the point that no one else could get up there.  They were very, how shall we say, gauche?
After becoming very close to another American gentleman who was only trying to exit from his front row seats, we ended up having a rather hilarious conversation in which I do believe I might have been impregnated due to our sheer proximately.
Me: "This is insane."
Him: "Yes: all this for a little painting."
Me: "I know.  And I'm not sure it's that great."
Him: "You know?  I'm quite sure it isn't."
Me: "He's done better."
Him: "I'm inclined to agree."
And so our awkward body rub came to its conclusion and I emerged in front of the famed picture and... yeah.
Not a winner.
I saw many other paintings that I unfortunately can't remember that immediately drew me in and were amazing on so many more levels.  The one I can remember was La Jeune Fille Martyre.  The Raft of Medusa was also incredibly emotional and very disturbing.
So much to view, really.  You'd need to come every day for days and days, and we don't have that luxury, malheureusement.
After this we jumped on the Metro (THUMBS UP to Paris Metro) and went out to La Defense (what better way to juxtapose the Louvre, oui?) and saw their major new business complex which still appears to be a bit fledgling.
Additionally, we saw the "third" Arc, through which you can see the Arc de Triomphe and the obelisk behind it, and the smaller Arc yet (though it wasn't visible to the eye).  But interesting axial planning, surely.
Shortly we are off to a snazzy jazz club, so I should probably get out of my Asics and sweaty t-shirt.
Yay Paris!

  1. Congrats on getting (fairly) close to Mona. You faired better than I; could never quite make that last hurdle of bodies to the railing. Of course carrying camera bag and cameras meant I wasn't exactly svelte and able to skinny into tight places. Amazing to be able to get so close to everything else, though. Sorry I won't be able to offer advice about Brugges; it's been so many decades . . . if I could remember, it'd probably be irrelevant or nonexistent now.
