Shake and bake

Okay, so the autocross: AWESOME.
I will back it up a bit here and say that in some regards my brother and I are pretty similar: we're somewhat reserved.  We weren't into athletics in high school.  If you had told me when I was 15 that I was going to run ten marathons (including Boston: twice) and 15+ half marathons?  I would have peed my pants laughing, and then got right back to my math homework.
Anyways, where I've gotten heavily into running and now - to some extent - biking, my brother got into Supermoto, dirt biking, cycling and autocross.  He also once ran a 10k with me for the experience, which I appreciated (oddly, I beat him, and additionally I placed 3rd in my age category because everyone in their mid-twenties in White Rock was nursing a hangover except for me and the two people that beat me).
My brother has had an incredible number of cars and trucks of the years.  He had a Monte Carlo, an El Camino, a Fiero and a bunch of other cars I can't recall.  I remember going with him to Port Kells to race... something... and the cops coming to shut the whole thing down.  It was a lot of fun.  I, myself, was driving a Toyota Supra at the time which basically meant that I had to race every idiot Mustang that pulled up next to me.  After hitting 160 km on Highway 99 I was sort of like, yeah... I have enough brains to know that this isn't safe for anyone.
My next car was a 99 Civic.
Today was so much fun, though.  My brother was driving his '73 Toyota Celica which totally reminded me of my childhood - except my childhood wasn't nearly as tricked out.  He had done six laps in the morning and ended up doing six or seven laps in the afternoon, and I was there for all but one of them.
Surprisingly (or not) Jay is a pretty conservative guy.  While there were guys out there hammering it and knocking over pylons, I don't think my brother knocked over a single one.  I remember driving up to Lasqueti with him when he has his El Camino, and for a young guy in his early twenties with a high profile car?  He drove more conservatively than I do (disclaimer: I am an aggressive driver due to my aggressive commute, but also I am good driver full stop) and I never forgot it.  He's a careful guy which is one of the reasons why I have no reservations about driving with him, on or off the track.
I had only a vague idea of what to expect when I got there and I wasn't nervous until we were waiting for the go ahead to do our circuit.  I really had no idea what was coming and then the woman said "Whenever you're ready" and we accelerated much, much, much more quickly than my current car accelerates and, well, I started screaming.
You know when you're doing something for the first time and the velocity of it is: a) more than you were expecting and b) scarier than you had originally thought it might be?  That was my first lap.  It was epic.  It was so much fun.  I eventually stopped screaming and Jay finished the lap and I immediately ran over to Michael and was like "You have to do this".
He enjoyed it as well (he's in the video below), but because he didn't want to detract from my fun, he let me ride along with Jay for all of the subsequent rides.  And we were getting consistently faster except that on our last lap Jay spun out on the last turn and we did a 180 and by the time we crossed the finish line it was too late, and then they shut the track down.
Boo!  We were on a roll.
It was the most fun I've had in ages and ages.  If I could drive stick I would be out there with some beater car (and there were beater cars out there).  It was just the perfect line between speed and control and precision and my brother had it in the bag.
So much fun.
Marathoning is for idiots.

  1. Hey, my car is a 73, not early 80's! And it's got ALL the restrictor plates removed! Glad you had fun. Bring the Civic out for the next one!

  3. LOL, I'm so glad you admitted that you were screaming. The first time I drove my hubby's Tony Kart I screamed all the way around the track. He waved me in and said "there's no screaming in Kart racing!" I didn't realize that I was screaming, it was just coming out on it's own. I wasn't used to making left turns. I'd only raced on an oval track. I started my new job last week and I now have a 15 mile commute in heavy traffic at 45mph. On the second day I thought "I'm going to get lots of speeding tickets." BTW my Miata is like the yellow one in the video.
