My life (non fiction)

I'm really starting to hate xmas.
My dad was like that and I used to hate that he was like that and lo, look at the firstborn now.
I hate consumerism.  I hate shit.  I hate corporations and materialism and waste.  I hate the mind numbing ignorance that comes with so many gifts.  Do you know what that organization represents?  Do you know the toxicity of that thing that you are buying?  The externalities?
I get it.  I'm 35 (holy fuck: I'm 35... actually had some doubts about getting this far) and I have it all and surely there are people that want for things, but really?  Check your wants.  I used to want a $4,000 Cartier watch and a nice wedding.  Now I want my grandmother to get better and my mom to find happiness in her new condo and for Michael and I to climb out of this maelstrom of hurt and guilt so that we can have a few years of happiness before I don't look both ways when crossing Lonsdale.
I also have to admit my new obsession.  Remember the time I went to Walmart and had to confess it?  This is up there.
So, I became addicted to Mad Men (on Netflix).  I'm waiting for more current episodes to be dropped down like manna from heaven.
Then I got addicted to Rescue Me.  I watched the hell out of that show.
Californication.  It is good.  My new bag, man.
It's not like there's a recurring theme amongst the main players in any of these shows.
Fucking Netflix.
Remember when I used to play Sudoku?
Goddamnit.

  1. I'm with you on the hating Christmas. Who needs all this shit that the stores think we should be buying? I'm so close to throwing something at the TV every time that stupid Wal-Mart commercial comes on with the girl finding the wedding ring in the stuffing. OMG, do they have to play that commercial every other commercial? We've seen it 4 times in one 10 minute station break! But if I throw something at the TV then I can't have a Dexter marathon! I'll just boycott Wal-Mart. I just bought the kids some dish towels and dish rags... they needed them, Jeff said he was washing dishes with a bath towel!!!

  2. I have to say that I'm with you in those first couple of sentences. I didn't grow up with Christmas (hellooo, I'm Cuban, Castro never allowed it until the Pope went to Cuba in '97) so I find the materialistic side of it sickening to the core. However, to me it's time off with my family that really matters.

I hope you have a good time with yours.

    Greetings from London.

  3. @ Jomamma: one of the nice things about not having cable is not having to watch the endless onslaught of advertising. I do NOT miss that. Especially this time of year!

@ A Cuban: thanks for the perspective. It's easy to get wound up over the holidays but yes, the thing I am looking forward to most is time with my family and friends.

    Merry Christmas all!
