The white trim? Iron painted white! |
Today we got up and headed down to our 10am tour (at Oglethorpe square, no less), and along the way we saw the 5k Colour Run that we were planning on doing but couldn't, because it started at 9am. Drr. Anyways, we've never seen a Colour run in action and it was pretty cool. There were four stations where runners get pelted with different coloured chalk so at the end, people were a rainbow coloured mess.
The walking tour with Savannah Walks was good. Our guide was friendly, informative and had a great sense of humour. She had a lot of interesting insider knowledge and some quite remarkable stories about the history and people of Savannah. It was just Michael and I on the tour which we rather enjoyed and we learned a lot.

Old cop cars become taxis here. |
Afterwards we popped by the
Owens-Thomas House to complete the trifecta of the Telfair Museums. Our guide was great and it was really interesting to view the home which was built by a 24 year old architect named William Jay who was from Bath, England, and who - in 1816 - constructed a house with indoor plumbing. Quite obviously Jay brought his knowledge of the Roman baths in Bath over here to Savannah. Definitely worth a trip if you're ever here.

Yellow colour zone! |
At around 3pm we headed to the
Masada Cafe at the United House of Prayer for All People. Seriously. We had heard that the food here was great and that the people were super friendly, so we hopped into the minivan (still recovering from that) and grabbed some late lunch since the kitchen closes at 5pm. I had planned on eating only half of mine and then saving the rest for later, but I ended up wolfing down most of my meatloaf, black eyed peas, Lima beans, mac and cheese, and cornbread. Yes. I want to weigh myself at this point just for a joke. I probably ate 2/3 of it and Michael polished off the rest. The ladies behind the counter were all atwitter once we said we were from Canada (and not just the East coast!). Even the pastor came out to talk to us since he had been to Toronto. They were such lovely, kind people and the meal was excellent. We were actually thinking we would swing by there to get some takeout for our dinner in Athens, GA tomorrow, but we don't have a microwave in our room there, so it looks like a no go.
We checked out the river front one final time (still a no-go: way too touristy) and then ended up back at the Crystal Beer Parlour where we had to wait at least half an hour to get in. Hey: at least we know the cool spots! We had a nice Greek appy platter and now we're doing laundry, getting our poop in a group and getting ready for Athens!
LOVE Savannah!!! The color run would have been cool!
ReplyDeleteYes, we were kind of bummed that we didn't get to do it. And it was ironic that we got to see it going on while we were doing the tour. Ah well, next time. :)
