Best. Goalie. Ever. |
What I am not, is a fan of the majority of Canucks fans. I'm not sure who these people are, or why they think it's appropriate to leave with ten minutes left in the third. Nor do I understand Tony Gallagher's ridiculous assumption that Roberto Luongo was being a diva regarding his contract. I stepped away from hockey for a while because I simply couldn't stomach the incessant whining and negativity coming from a city that hosts a hockey team that routinely makes the playoffs. The "fans" that go to Canucks games aren't fans at $120 a ticket: they are corporate ticket holders looking to impress clients and out of towners. Almost all of the games I have gone to have been comped and the seats paid for by a corporation. Where's the allegiance?
You don't like the way the Canucks play? Try following the Jets or the Leafs for a few games.
Tonight's game was an absolutely typical Canucks game. We had the lead, we lost the lead, our goalie made 46 saves to Quick's 27, and yet still we lost. But Luongo is a diva, right? This diva is going to Sochi.
Vancouver fans are so coddled? disallusioned? unfamiliar with hockey? that they would actually complain about their goalie, who is going to the Olympics for the second time in his career.
Ryan Kesler's making five million dollars a year: he finally scored a goal tonight. Most of the time he doesn't even hit the fucking net. David Booth - the avid hunter that likes to post pictures of himself with dead animals - is pulling in $4.5 million a year. He had 40 points with the Panthers in 2010/2011, playing 82 games. He's had one point in the last five games.
We have a lot of potential goal scorers on our team, and yet they don't seem to be scoring goals. We were behind by one goal for the last four or five minutes in tonight's game, and the Canucks played as though we were down 4-1. Where's the fire? Where's the rally?
But back to why I wear a Boston Bruins shirt out in public.
I love Boston. I love the city and the people. I love that they are winners. Tim Thomas is one of my all time favourite goaltenders (though he's since moved on to Florida). But what I love is that, like back when Boston beat Vancouver, Boston is made up of Canadians. Right now there are 17 Canadians on the Boston team, but 13 on the Canucks team.
When you get together and rally for the Canucks, what exactly are you rallying for?
A logo of a whale?
The proximity of the team to where you are?
When Lucic (30 points this season so far) came back to play in his hometown and then later got accosted at a nightclub, Vancouver fans thought it was hilarious. I can't think of a more disgusting homecoming for a Stanley Cup winner and possible Sochi Olympian. From a city that has rioted twice when losing the Stanley Cup, you'd think we'd have a little more class and support our local athletes.
I love Vancouver. I love Luongo. Jannik Hansen is killing it. I like Zack Kassian. He is one point behind David Booth on the season for chrissakes.
I hope they have a good run this year, like I always hope. But sometimes I feel like maybe I want it more than they do.
And this is why I wear a Bruin's shirt from time to time.
AH: two games in a row like this!!!
ReplyDeleteSee, this is why I avoid getting emotionally attached to stuff I have zero control over.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair though, this is pretty much your fault. You should have cheered harder. Get it together duder.
I will. Just digging out my Boston shirt for tonight's game. ;)
