Long story short, we're coming up on 8pm on a Friday night and I'm guessing we'll be in bed before nine. We're wiped.
From Venice we took a rather long bus ride to Rome, along the way seeing the Tuscan hills and the beginnings of Roman ruins throughout the country. It was a lengthy trip, but the scenery and the mountain passes were amazing.
We rolled into Rome a little late and basically had half an hour to freshen up before heading into the city for a walking tour (with gelato!) which visited three different squares, as well as the Pantheon.
Some people opted to go for a "Roman dinner" that night, but we opted to for room service and to turn in early. We have rather quickly caught on that the "optional excursions" that are dinner based are simply unending supplies of food and booze during a two hour period, which makes 6am wake up calls just that much more unsettling.
The history in this city is immense in both depth and breadth. The other immense bits are the stunning throngs of tourists, and the epic traffic.
I would like Rome, if 3/4 of the people and the traffic weren't here, but everyone is here like I am to view this specific and important bit of history, and the traffic is totally fucked because they only have two subway lines. They are working on a third line, but it's Rome and they keep running in to Roman ruins and so they have to stop and bring in archaeologists to check out the sites and the artifacts and, long story short, they've been working on their third underground transportation line for over a decade.
It's definitely strange being an atheist in the Vatican. The money and the opulence and the tithes and the effort put into building up this rather detailed fairy tale with gold leafed palaces in Venice and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel in Rome while people starved.
My mom pointed out the similarities between that era and our own and I can't disagree: we still have the super rich that are out of touch with the general populace, and where the Romans were entertained with bread and circuses, we're entertained with reality TV and fast food.
I wish I was kidding.
I was absolutely mortified. Canadians, for the most part, are unflaggingly polite and accommodating. To be painted (or tainted) by the same brush as this ignorant and obnoxious individual is humiliating (to set the record straight: he and his wife are from Oshawa) to say the least.
Right. It's a whopping 8.40pm at night and I think my mom and I are going to bed shortly. We are off to Florence tomorrow, for one night.
As for "cozy time"? I'm just happy we haven't landed a joint bed yet, like the mother/son combo on our tour. That's just awkward regardless of where you're from.
I kept expecting to see you. Not sure how you're planning five weeks on the continent if you've hit all these places in just a few days. Sounds vaguely familiar: twolongsmakeawrite[dot]wordpress[dot]com
ReplyDeleteWe are certainly moving at a breakneck speed. Currently in Nice and then we will be heading to Zermatt, Lucerne and Paris. Once in Paris the tour ends but I will be staying on for another two weeks with Michael and moving much, much more slowly!
