And.... I'm done.

I suppose I'm a little slow on the uptake because I'd rather read Graham Greene than watch 90% of the shit that makes up mainstream television.
As such, I didn't really know who Robin Thicke was until a couple of weeks ago (namely because I've really been enjoying Kanye West's Yeezus album which is fucking awesome, as well as Azealia Banks).

You ever ask your bitch for other bitches?
Anyways, after this whole totally blown out of proportion issue with Miley Cyrus (um, has she done ANYTHING that Madonna, Cher or Britney Spears hasn't done?), I decided to Google Robin Thicke. Found his video what with all the titties (and it's really hard to embed so I've given up and also, really?  He doesn't want to share his misogynistic video with the world #sosad).
So I'm sort of like "Why is middle America so up in arms?".
The parents of middle America (hence to be referred to as M.A.) are insinuating that Miley Cyrus isn't a good role model.
Are you moronic?
I'm somewhere in between the baby boomers and Gen X and I grew up with the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.  Hello "Sympathy for the Devil".  Hello "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".  Are you kidding me?  I listened to the Woodstock album and everyone was wrecked and yeah it was groovy and oh - collectively if we will hard enough we can change the weather (or whatever) - it was such an amazing experience, but shit: do you want your kids to look up to these people?
Jim Morrison died in a bathtub.  Janice Joplin OD'd.  And on and on and on and on...
Again, per my prior post regarding Cyrus?  Get it together.
Mainstream society created the desire for Cyrus to exist.  And so she does.
If you're pissed off that your daughter doesn't have a valid role model: it's your fault.  Whatever led you to believe that the entertainment complex was going to deliver that to you?
I just absolutely cannot believe the hypocrisy and the unwarranted backlash surrounding Miley's MMVA performance.
If your kids are getting their moral guidelines from musicians and actors?  You've failed as a parent.
Teachers.
Firefighters.
Environmentalists.
Care givers.
UN workers.
Doctors Without Borders.
Volunteers at the SPCA.
If Miley's performance disturbed you in any way?  You need to check yourself and your understanding of the workings of the world.

  1. I have so many things to say about this whole MVA thing - but essentially, I agree with you. Cyrus twerking her mostly nude butt on some dude's crotch is nothing to get up in arms over. Young entertainers being shocking in a sexual manner on TV is hardly anything new - it seems now like its a rite of passage if anything.

Cyrus was a role model - maybe - when the Disney Princess Machine was in charge, but she's not Hannah Montana (anymore than Daniel Radcliffe is Harry Potter - remember the uproar over Equus??) and so long as she's the one choosing to twerk half-naked on TV, I say let her have at it.

Like you said, we created her - we like being titillated and shocked and then acting outraged when someone titillates or shocks us, so we just have to deal with our creation. But giving her shit for being exactly what we asked her to be is pointless.

  2. I'll say it again.... you are the kind of person that should be raising kids.

Everybody grows up and starts living life and that life comes with some choices. Who's to say that Miley isn't totally excited with her performance on MVA? And who's to say Robin wasn't excited too. People do stuff, and now days when they do stuff it's caught on camera. I guess people who are up in arms are just ashamed that they shoved Hannah Montana down their kid's throat a few years back. Kind of like they are ashamed to have preached the sins of smoking dope to their kids and then they were caught with a 3ft bong in their closet.
