Every day that I am able to hike, run or bike in our beautiful city is a good day for which I am thankful.
At any rate, it would appear that I was not the only one absolutely taken aback by his whinging, as here is Gary Kingston's follow up which proves further just how much he missed the point:
Wow. A guy ill-advisedly writes a blog on a bad day, after a bad week, and the whole world - or is it just the road cycling snobs - jump all over him. My blog two weeks ago was called, among other things, overly negative and very depressing. Somebody else compared me to late 60 Minutes curmudgeon Andy Rooney, which I actually consider an honour.
Look, doing the GranFondo training and blogging about it was a last-minute thing for me, something a couple of editors talked me into. And my blogging was never meant to serve as some sort of "Golly gee, isn't this fun" motivational tool for the rest of you.
It was meant to be a straightforward account of the training experience for a 56-year-old guy new to intense road cycling. I wouldn't be honest with myself or you if I tried to sugar coat how I feel it's going.
It has been a struggle to get all the training rides in, but I'm sure I'm not alone in that regard. I've been busier than I anticipated this summer.
Now, all that said, I'm no quitter. I relish the challenge of trying to pull this of and to do it in a reasonable time.
And things have been going better of late. I took my bike into La Bicicletta and they changed the cassette on the back wheel, a move that has made pedalling up challenging hills slightly easier.
I've had a few decent rides in the last couple of weeks, including a tough, four-hour journey to Aldergrove and back, via Crescent Beach and White Rock. My hip exors, though, were screaming over the last 30 minutes. Clearly I'm going to need to do some intensive work over the next five weeks to ensure I can go 120 kilometres on some uphill terrain.
I may never fully embrace this kind of riding - I'm more likely to look at some touring riding with my wife - but I'm sure many of you hard-core riders out there don't enjoy running 10Ks as much as I do. To each his own.
I'm going to keep plugging away, but I'm also going to keep trying to slip in a run, a golf game or a kayak outing when time permits.
I read this quote today "People and situations are the way they are, not the way I want them to be.” I would have to stop reading his blog.
ReplyDeleteI've stopped, yep.
DeleteHe's just blogging because he has to do, so I can understand why it would feel like a job for him.... If I had to train for the granfondo and blog for it, I'd probably whine a fair bit too. Then again, why ride a bike when you can rock a sweet hummer like all the cool guys?
ReplyDeleteYou're right: I should throw rocks at Hummers.
