They can only say no.

Today I asked HR what the protocol was for me to start the process to apply for a year's unpaid leave.
I'm not sure if everyone in my life is super ecstatic about this.
I've been working since I was 12 years old.  I'd like a break.
Michael says that I'm lucky to be in a position whereby I have options.  I don't disagree with this.  And I'm not sorry that I have options.  And maybe I'd be an idiot not to utilize said options.
I'm sitting here in my bed and just now listening to the Elbow album that I downloaded weeks ago.  I would just like some time to myself.  I have never had that in my life save for the few weeks of panicked unemployment that I had in 2009.
I also shared a story I was working on up until last year with R because I do very much value her opinion.  She seemed to think that it didn't entirely suck, which is cool because I know that we both seem to prefer (and write in) different genres.
I also did hills (3X) which I haven't done for months and months and which our clinic was doing tonight (I beat them to it), and which is part of my training for Boston
Yeah.  Boston.
And so now I wait to see what they say.
I could do way more hills if I didn't have to work all the time.
Also: hit the 20,000 word mark tonight.

  1. Not only did it not entirely suck, it was well done and funny, too!

Congrats on the word count too - 20,000 seems to be the start of the uphill battle to write (but oddly, the writing gets better to read from this point on) - keep on writing, I'm rooting for you! :D

    1. Thanks!
And now that I've "put it out there" I do feel a bit of pressure to stick with it. Sort of like announcing that you're going on a diet (which I will totally do starting next week).

  2. If you are in a position to take the time off you should do it. Later on you may not be in that position. I would love to read anything you published, I like your style of writing.

    1. Thanks, Judith! If I ever do finish a book I'll certainly send you a copy of it.
Likely it will be self-published. ;)

  3. hank you, same here. Only my self-published book would probably be in the form of a spiral notebook and have a red ink pen included so the reader can self-edit.

    1. I should. If only so I can dress up in black and sit in Calhoun's looking all anguished about the writing process.

    4. Be sure to get some hipster granny shoes to go with it, and maybe an ugly hat too.
