I wanted to accomplish two things today

To not crash, and to not get a flat.
Hey, how are you?  Been a while.  Been up to a lot of stuff lately: my brother's birthday in White Rock with the wee baby Seamus; Royal Wood with L; dinner and drinks and a kubb set I've yet to pay for with C; lunch with my mom.
On Friday we headed up to Penticton  Michael's brother and his wife (from Lethbridge) stayed an extra night just to see us, which was really nice as we don't see each other very often at all.
Today we got up at 5am for the race that I've been training for since... like May?  What?  I was busy doing Boston and then running the Vancouver half and then dealing with my body flipping me the bird for a while.
Look: I put in the time on the road and did the distances and, with the exception of my epic wipeout, I think my training schedule was pretty good for someone who just wrapped up a World Marathon Major (my third, thanks) and followed it with her sixteenth half before diving headlong into a sport she'd never taken seriously before.
It was 92 kilometres.  We rode from Penticton to Summerland and back, and then to OK Falls and back.  I stopped at all the aid stations and I wimped out going down some of the epic hills, but I didn't fall and I didn't get a flat and I also picked off no insignificant number of Cervellos on the hill climbs.  I even bumped into a fellow hybrid rider and we high-fived when we got to talking about the people all decked out, walking their fancy bikes up the hill out of Summerland as we grinded by them and passed other riders.
I have a whole cycling rant here, but I'll focus on the positive.  I enjoyed the course: it was fun; scenic and challenging.  The volunteers were tremendous.  I was pleased with my finishing time even though I finished in the bottom percentage whereas, with running, I normally am in the top 10 - 20%.  Stingers are tasty.  The post race beer and burger was the best thing I'd ever had.  We bumped into a buddy of ours from North and, though it took away from what would no doubt have been a crazy amount of fanfare when I crossed the finish line, I did get passed by one of the first pelotons coming in for the full course, and that was pretty freaking amazing.

  1. Yea! You know I live vicariously through you and I was afraid you were just laying around getting fat like me.

  2. Oh believe me: I've gotten fat. I'm just going to enjoy the fatness for another few days and then shape up when I return home.
When you're a little tubby it ain't no thang to ride a bike - in fact you get more momentum when you go downhill!

  3. OK, but remember too much momentum is a bad thing on a slip-n-slide. Take my word for it.
